  1. The Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California has an on-site photovoltaic system that produces 1.18 megawatts, giving $15 million in net savings over the 25-year life of the project.
  2. The Shop 'n' Save supermarket chain has installed base load generators at almost a dozen of its grocery stores, avoiding $40,000 in losses per day in the event of a power outage.
  3. A police station in New York's Central Park bought a fuel cell to run its electronic crime-fighting equipment, saving $200,000 over the cost of a line upgrade.

In about 10 U.S. states the cost of solar power is now at “grid parity” with other forms of electricity generation, and about 20 states will be at that level within two years.

The International Energy Agency said that solar energy could be the most important source of electricity by 2050, thanks to the declining cost of photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic systems could generate 16 per cent of global power by then. Currently, solar supplies about one half of 1 per cent of the world’s electricity.
